Cat Ba is the largest island in Lan Ha and Ha Long Bay and the most popular weekend trip from Hai Phong. Several routes exist, run by different operators, and the sources we found disagree on piers, prices and timetables. This guide explains the route types and lists exactly what to confirm before you go.

Route types

Travel blogs describe three main options. The first is a direct hydrofoil or speedboat from Ben Binh pier in central Hai Phong to Cat Ba town, which skips the transfer across Cat Hai island but runs only a few times a day. The second is the everyday road-and-ferry route: you travel to the Hai Phong side of the channel, cross by ferry to Cat Hai, and continue to Cat Ba. The third is the northern route from Tuan Chau near Ha Long to Gia Luan on Cat Ba, which suits travellers coming from Ha Long rather than Hai Phong.

Speedboat from Ben Binh

One blog gives the direct boat as roughly 1.5 hours at around 140,000 VND per person, departing from Binh port in Hong Bang district. Treat that as a rough guide only. Another source says the departure pier differs between operators, so confirm the exact pier and departure time with the operator the day before.

Ferry and road route

The ferry route is the busiest everyday option because it carries cars and motorbikes. The bridge from the mainland reaches Cat Hai island, and the last stretch to Cat Ba is still by boat or by the cable car described in tourism sources. If you travel with a motorbike or a rented car, this is usually the route to plan around.

When to travel

Weekends and summer are the busiest periods, and one operator reports queues at Gia Luan between 8 and 9 in the morning and between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. Sea conditions can cancel speedboats, particularly during typhoon season. Book return tickets with a margin, and avoid tight same-day flight connections.

Before you go

Check the current timetable and fare directly with the operator, because published prices change and several blogs list operators that no longer run. Carry your passport for ticket checks, keep valuables in a waterproof bag, and ask your accommodation on Cat Ba whether they offer pier pick-up.
