Hai Phong is the main port of the north and, since its merger with Hai Duong province on 1 July 2025, a city of about 4.6 million people whose economy ranks third in Vietnam after Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. It is a working city with a growing number of foreign engineers and managers. This guide covers where to live, what things cost and how to get around.

Overview

The city grew around the port and the industrial parks to the east. The centre keeps French-era streets, lakes and cafes, while newer districts have gated apartment towers. English is common in hotels, company offices and international clinics, and less so in markets and local restaurants.

Where to live

Expats working in the industrial parks often choose apartments in the newer Vinhomes developments or in serviced apartments near the centre, because of security, parking and shops on site. The old centre around Le Chan and Ngo Quyen districts is livelier but older housing varies in quality. Visit in the rainy season if you can, because some low streets flood after heavy rain.

Cost of living

Rent depends strongly on building and view. As a rough guide, modern one-bedroom apartments are priced in the low to mid hundreds of US dollars per month, and houses cost several times more. Local meals are cheap, while imported groceries and restaurant drinks cost much more. Collect quotes from agents and building management before deciding; prices change quickly.

Healthcare

Vinmec International Hospital offers English-speaking outpatient care and a 24-hour emergency unit (the national ambulance number is 115). For complex or specialist cases, patients are usually transferred to Hanoi, roughly an hour and a half away by expressway. Buy travel or health insurance that covers evacuation, and keep copies of your medical records.

Getting around

Cat Bi International Airport has domestic flights and a small international network that, as of early 2026, includes Bangkok, Seoul Incheon and several Chinese cities such as Guangzhou, Nanning and Lijiang; some routes are seasonal. The expressway to Hanoi makes day trips and airport transfers possible. Within the city, ride-hailing apps and motorbike taxis cover most trips, and many companies run shuttles between the city and industrial parks.

Food and daily life

Try banh da cua (crab noodle soup) and nem cua be (crab spring rolls), two famous local dishes. Cafes and small expat groups are the easiest way to meet people. Learn a few Vietnamese phrases for greetings, numbers and directions; they make daily errands much easier.
